Northeast Lakeview College has been named a 2024 Most Promising Places to Work in Community Colleges. The award focuses on workplace staffing practices, and work environment.  The research team uses a web-based survey approach to examine categories such as family friendliness, salary/benefits, and professional development opportunities to determine the list. 18 community colleges made the most Promising Places to Work for 2024.  Northeast Lakeview College has been recognized with this honor annually since 2019

Northeast Lakeview College is proud to announce that its Cyber Defense program has been recognized by the National Security Agency (NSA) as the area’s newest Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education. The recognition came after the integration of our Cyber Defense program and instructional methods into other IT programs offered at Northeast Lakeview and into non-technical programs like Criminal Justice studies. More than 150 hands-on projects are embedded in the coursework, developing technical skills that allow Northeast Lakeview College students to excel in national cyber competitions, the cyber workforce, internships, and universities.

NLC Cyber Defense students have been recognized by the National Cyber League (NCL) for their recent efforts during the NCL Spring 2023 Competition Season, ranking #74 out of 450 colleges and universities. Students participated in individual and team-based events. The NCL, powered by Cyber Skyline, is a cybersecurity skills competition that contains real-world cybersecurity tasks that professionals perform on a daily basis. Students who participate in the NCL reinforce their learning and develop the necessary skills for the workforce.

The National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) and Diverse: Issues In Higher Education (Diverse) recognized Northeast Lakeview College as one of the 2023 Most Promising Places to Work in Community Colleges! The annual award recognizes community and technical colleges committed to diversity through best-in-class student and staff recruitment and retention practices, inclusive learning and working environments, and meaningful community service and engagement opportunities. NLC has received this recognition annually since 2019 (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022)

Northeast Lakeview College (NLC) announced that it has partnered with Bezos Academy to open a tuition-free, Montessori-style preschool on NLC’s campus. This is the first Bezos Academy preschool planned for northeast Bexar County and the greater San Antonio area. The Bezos Academy, is a tuition free preschool that will follow a full-day, year-round schedule, and will cover operating expenses for the preschool programs at no cost to the families being served.  The Bezos site on the NLC campus is scheduled to welcome students in late 2024.

Northeast Lakeview College has been named One of 2022 Most Promising Places to work in Community Colleges.  24 community colleges made the list recognized by the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) and Diverse: Issues in Higher Education. The award is based on criteria that focuses on workplace diversity, staffing practices, and work environment, among other elements. NLC has received this recognition annually since 2019 (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022).

Northeast Lakeview ranked #33 in the Central Region. For comparison, UTSA ranked #38, and San Antonio College was ranked #40. Texas A&M San Antonio, Palo Alto College, and St. Phillips College did not make the Top 50 in the central region.

Dr. Veronica Garcia, NLC President, was featured in the September-October 2021 edition of San Antonio Woman Magazine.  Titled “Aiming for Higher Education,” the story profiles Dr. Garcia’s background and her path towards becoming a college president. It focuses on her education career that was built on tenacity and a desire to transform community college systems.  She first became an administrator at Pima Community College and from there held positions at several institutions of higher education, each with increasing responsibility.  Leading to Northeast Lakeview College where she became president in 2017.

NLC Cyberdefense Student Group, Nighthax, take 2^nd place in National Cyber League Competition.  After competing for the first time, The NightHax group took 2^nd place in the Bronze Division of the National Cyber League beating 380 other college teams in their bracket. The National Cyber League competition is a “capture the flag” or “hack-a-thon” style event for U.S. collegiate (2yr, 4yr, and graduate) level schools. The competition includes challenges from Open Source Intelligence, Cryptography, Password Cracking, Forensics, and 5 other categories. Students are given cybersecurity challenges ranging from easy to hard and have 56 hours over a single weekend to solve as many challenges as possible.

Northeast Lakeview College was recently recognized for having one of the best 20 associate degree programs in Cybersecurity. Best Value Schools ranks schools and their programs by the annual tuition and fees per year, and the annual graduation rate. Colleges were ranked in a points system with the emphasis on lower tuition costs and higher graduation rate percentages. A weighted total of three-quarters tuition and fees and the one-quarter graduation rate was then applied for the final score. 

Protecting critical assets over the internet has taken growing precedence in today’s business sectors. With increasing demands for online security and a growing concern for protecting private and trade secret data from hackers, the U.S. job market reflects the needs of cybersecurity in the field. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that cybersecurity jobs will grow 31% from 2019 to 2029.

The recognition is given by the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) and Diverse: Issues in Higher Education and recognizes Northeast Lakeview College's best-in-class student and staff recruitment and retention practices, inclusive learning and working environments, and meaningful community service and engagement opportunities. The award also recognizes an institution's exceptional commitment to diversity (including race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, class, veterans, and thought). This is a national award with recipients being selected from across the country. Northeast Lakeview College received the same recognition in 2019.

Northeast Lakeview College received Progress Level Recognition from the Quality Texas Foundation (QTF). Achieving recognition at the Progress Level indicates substantial progress toward institutionalizing an effective, systematic approach to organizational management, with good performance levels and trends evaluated against industry standards. NLC began its journey with the Quality Texas Foundation in 2016 and received Pioneer Recognition from the organization, Engagement Level Recognition in 2018, and Commitment Level in 2019. Northeast Lakeview College uses feedback from Quality Texas Foundation (QTF) at each of its recognized levels as part of its overall continuous improvement process and annual planning cycle.

The Quality Texas Foundation assists organizations with continuous improvement efforts by utilizing the Baldrige Framework and since 1993, QTF has administered the Texas Award for Performance Excellence (TAPE) as an independent non-profit corporation. Winning TAPE symbolizes that the organization is one of the best in the state of Texas-based upon a very rigorous and robust process. QTF has also had many organizations win the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and leads all the other states in this area.

The Beta Sigma Delta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Northeast Lakeview College was named a 2020 REACH Chapter and will receive special recognition in the form of 5 Phi Theta Kappa graduation stoles that will be sent directly to your chapter’s advisor. These stoles can be distributed to chapter officers or members to be worn during graduation and to keep in celebration of their college completion milestone. The recognition is part of PTK’s REACH Rewards program, which celebrates and rewards Phi Theta Kappa chapters excelling in membership development. Additionally, the chapter utilized more organization benefits, including scholarships and increased opportunities for engagement with peers and faculty on campus — which lead to higher rates of completion.

Nineteen community colleges made the list recognized by the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) and Diverse. The annual award ranks institutions based on workplace diversity, staffing practices, and overall work environment. It also recognizes commitments to diversity through best-in-class student and staff recruitment and retention practices, inclusive learning, and working environments, and meaningful community service and engagement opportunities.

Northeast Lakeview College was Awarded the 2018 Platinum Level Healthy Workplace Recognition from the City of San Antonio Mayor’s Fitness Council. The program recognizes local employers for their worksite wellness efforts. The 2018 Healthy Workplace Recognition Program awarded employers with bronze, silver, gold, or platinum-level awards. To receive recognition, employers had to meet criteria in six categories: culture, health promotion and education, physical activity, nutrition, smoking and tobacco cessation, and value-based benefits & design. The level of award is based on the number of activities each company implemented in the six categories. For example, bronze-level awardees must achieve a minimum of 18 activities across these categories, while platinum-level awardees need to achieve a minimum of 72 activities.

Recognized as one of the 10 Most Admired Colleges and Universities to Watch in 2018, institutions are recognized for student engagement, faculty-student ratio, teaching quality, educational and curricular facilities, events and cultural programs, career opportunities, ethical knowledge, and a wide variety of other factors. These colleges and universities were recognized in "The Knowledge Review" publication.

Barbara Mayo, assistant professor of speech, received the Community College Educator of the Year Award from the Texas Speech Communication Association (TSCA). Each district, represented by the TEA Regions, can submit a nominee. The nominees are required to submit a portfolio that includes their contribution to the organization and letters of support from students and colleagues. The nominees were announced at the TSCA luncheon, and she received her award at the President’s Reception. Mayo has held a number of different offices in TSCA including the President in 2007-2008.

Ahmet Aksoy, NLC Advisor, was recently named 2017 New Professional of the Year for The Texas Association of College and University Student Affairs Personnel Association (TACUSPA). He was also recognized at the October First Friday meeting as the recipient of the inaugural Staff Senate Scholarship.

The Leadership Academy is a two-year program that provides an opportunity for current and aspiring community college business officers and other administrative services employees to enhance their knowledge on the various intricacies of the chief business officer leadership role. The Academy’s goal is to provide participants with the knowledge of best practices of leadership within a community college.

Congratulations to the members and the sponsors of Beta Sigma Delta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society for its recent recognition as a Five Star Chapter, the highest level distinction. The advisors of the NLC chapter are Dr. Dollie Hudspeth and Regina Espree. The advisors played a critical role in helping the NLC Chapter move from three to five stars in just two years.
